Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni has commended farmers and fisherfolk for sustaining Ghana’s food security as she delivered the keynote address at the 41st Municipal Farmers Day celebration held at the Kissieman Sports Complex.
She said farmers remain the backbone of the nation’s economy and stressed that the 2025 theme, “Feed Ghana, Secure the Future,” captures the country’s resolve to strengthen sustainable food production.
Hon. Awuni reaffirmed government’s commitment to transforming the agricultural sector and outlined key interventions aimed at modernizing farming and supporting vulnerable households.
Touching on the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Program, she explained that the backyard poultry initiative is helping reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported chicken by providing birds, feed, and technical support to women and youth. She said the programme is improving nutrition and strengthening the local poultry value chain.
On mechanization, she announced that 50 Farmer Service Centres have been established nationwide to make agricultural machinery more accessible and affordable. She said the Centres, equipped with tractors, harvesters, planters, and other essential farm implements, will boost efficiency, expand cultivation, and reduce post-harvest losses.
Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni noted that these interventions form part of the broader Feed Ghana Programme, which aims to ensure national food sufficiency and support local industries with raw materials.
Hon. Awuni congratulated all award winners for their dedication and encouraged farmers in the municipality to embrace modern technology and take advantage of government support systems. She called on the Municipal Assembly, the Department of Agriculture, traditional authorities, and the youth to work together to make Okaikwei North a model of agricultural excellence.
She stressed that “the future of Ghana is green” and urged all stakeholders to contribute to feeding the nation and securing its future.
