The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has made significant progress in building sports infrastructure. Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has said.
According to him, the government has also instituted policies that have promoted talent development as well as ensuring that athletes have the resources they need to excel.
“Mr. Speaker, we have made significant progress in enhancing sports infrastructure, talent development, and ensuring that our athletes have the resources they need to excel.” The Minister said this during his mid-year budget review presentation to Parliament on Tuesday, July 23.
Highlighting some of the sports infrature, Dr. Amin Adam mentioned the new international standard multi-complex sports facility at Borteyman, and the newly commissioned University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
He added that Ghana’s performance and successfully hosted the 13th African Games from 4th to 23rd March 2024 in Accra indicated significant improvement in the Sports activities in Ghana.
“Ghana successfully hosted the 13th African Games from 4th to 23rd March 2024 in Accra at the new international standard multi-complex sports facility at Borteyman, and the newly commissioned University of Ghana Sports Stadium. We placed sixth on the medals table with a total of 69 medals: 19 gold, 29 silver, and 21 bronze. This is Ghana’s best performance at an international multi-sport event, so far.” He said.
“Mr. Speaker, the Black Challenge of Ghana also participated and won the trophy in the 2024 African Amputee Football Cup of Nations tournament hosted and organised in Egypt. This win secured the team a spot at the 2026 Amputee World Cup Tournament.”
Meanwhile, former Black Stars player, Prince Tagoe said Ghana can also produce good players like Lamine Yamal to develop Ghanaian football if the government and other stakeholders consider building a good infrastructure and invest properly in the sports sector.
