A member of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Vishnu Nene Limon Abayateye, has filed a petition for the removal of the association’s president, Dr. Frank Serebour.

According to him, Dr. Frank Serebour’s directive for GMA non-participation of the Organized Labour’s strike against illegal mining popularly known as galamsey without recourse to the national executive council or the general assembly is a contravention of article 16 of the GMA constitution.

“Unilaterally issuing a statement without recourse to the national executive council or the general assembly, in announcing the non-participation of the Association in Organized Labour’s strike against illegal mining and its devastating health and environmental effects. This is in obvious contravention of article 16 of the GMA constitution.” Dr. Abayateye said in a statement.

His statement comes after Dr. Frank Serebour announced that the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has pulled out of the strike action because their strike will put the country in jeopardy two (2) months to the elections.

“I would like to take this opportunity to inform all of you that the Ghana Medical Association is not joining the strike. We will not embark on strike action but we do in solidarity actually share some of the sentiments Organized Labour has raised but we will find our own ways of dealing with issues and not going around in strike action to jeopardize the country two (2) months to the elections.” Dr. Frank Serebour announced.

But the GMA member believes the announcement appears duplicitous in the eyes of well-meaning Ghanaians because of GMA’s previous positions on the health and environmental effects of illegal mining.

“The above action brought the association into disrepute in the eyes of the general public and made the association appear duplicitous in the eyes of well-meaning Ghanaian, giving our previous position in illegal mining.” Part of the statement read.

The nationwide strike by Organized Labour scheduled for October 10, 2024, in protest against illegal mining in the country.

Many Ghanaians have raised concerns over the destruction of the environment and water bodies which poses health risks.
