Ghanaians are suffering because of cedi depreciation – Dormaahene laments

The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, has attributed the economic hardships in Ghana to the depreciation of the Ghana cedi.

He said the Ghana cedis which has increased between 7 to 8 years under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s NPP government has affected businesses leading to the economic hardships.

In a video shared by Sunyani-based Ark FM on July 29, 2024, the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs lamented the depreciation of the Ghana cedis against the US dollar from GH¢4 of the previous government to almost GH¢16.

“Something is going on in Ghana and the politicians have intentionally done that, it is not only one person all of them. If there is anything wrong and you talk about it they said you are doing politics, if they embezzle state funds and you raise concerns they said you are doing politics. They don’t want anyone to speak but for Agyeman Badu II, I will stop talking when I am dead, If you do anything wrong I will say it.” He said.

Dormaahene continued “Ghanaians should listen to this, in 2008, I went to the UAE (Dubai), when you change $1, it was their currency (‘dirham’)AED 3,7. I went there last week and the rate was the same. When Kufuor was in power, a dollar cost about GH¢1. During the late Atta Mills’ regime, the dollar increased to over GH¢2. When Mahama came to office, it was between GH¢3.7 to GH¢4. But currently, the cost of dollars is GH¢15.8, almost GH¢16.”

“This is why we are suffering. Neither any of my chiefs or I are responsible for managing the country’s currency. So if everybody is silent, for me I will speak.” He added.

He also descended on the government over an attempt to sell SSNIT hotels.

“Recently, when they tried to sell some hotels,  the workers in Ghana didn’t tell them? If you are going to sell the hotels, it should be to make them better. The workers raised concerns but they didn’t understand. And even they wanted to sell to their own person. If you are a government, you are a caretaker, does caretaker eat sardine for the Landlords sleep hungry?

“It is about Nana Addo, he will leave office soon, any president who will come whether Dr. Bawumia, Mr. Mahama, GUM, Chadder, Hassan Ayariga, Akua Donkor. Any president who will come and do something wrong, I will criticise you but if you do good I will praise you.”
