Ghanaian youth have been encouraged to develop skills in handiwork to ensure their financial independence.

According to Mr. Jacob Kese,the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bethel Fashion and Deco(Abuakwa) and secretary of Ghana Cooperative Fashion Designers Association, Abuakwa Society,aims to empower young people with practical skills, reducing reliance on white-collar jobs and promoting entrepreneurship. He emphasized that acquiring through handiwork helps one to earn a living and supports oneself and prevents dependency.

He further indicated that engaging in handiwork improves the innovation and creativity abilities of an individual, enhancing the thinking ability and knowledge of oneself.

Moreover,he stressed on how opportunity that avails itself to those who engage in such jobs and how it exposes them to the marketing world,and therefore entreated the youth to enroll as apprentices in skill development jobs rather than always seeking for white-collar jobs.

“The youth of today must be encouraged to develop practical skills to complement their academic qualifications. Handiwork is an essential part of our economic development, and we must support our young people in acquiring these  skills”, the CEO said.

However, Mr. Kese expressed worries on how parents give much attention to their wards who further their education at the University level in such of white-collar jobs leaving behind those who engage in handiwork jobs, emphasizing that they should all be given the needed attention.

He finally called on the government to support apprentices with some allowances to sustain them in their journey, just as teachers and nursing trainees are giving allowance to support their education.

He made this call during the third graduation ceremony of the association where hundreds of people graduated tailors and seamstresses.

On their part, some of the graduates expressed their heartfelt gratitude to God Almighty and their Masters for giving them the opportunity to acquire such  knowledge and skills.

They further encouraged the youth to develop practical skills to complement their academic qualifications rather than always engaging in white-collar jobs.
