Ghana has received strong commendation at the ongoing Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) session in Geneva, following a successful first day of engagement led by the Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah.

The commendation came during Ghana’s interaction with the Committee, where the country was praised for its demonstrated commitment to child-friendly policies and sustained reforms aimed at protecting the rights and welfare of children.

Members of the Committee particularly applauded Ghana’s efforts in addressing key child protection concerns, including the reduction and elimination of child labour, teenage pregnancy, child sexual exploitation—such as child pornography—and the gradual move away from the use of corporal punishment.

Ghana’s progress presented at the session highlighted the implementation of the Ghana Accelerated Action Plan Against Child Labour, targeted interventions to prevent teenage pregnancy among schoolgirls, and structured mechanisms that allow adolescent mothers to re-enter school after childbirth.

The Committee also acknowledged Ghana’s existing legal and policy frameworks designed to safeguard children against abuse, neglect, and exploitation, noting the country’s willingness to engage openly on both achievements and challenges.

Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah’s participation on day one was described as impactful, as Ghana used the platform not only to showcase progress made in advancing children’s rights but also to engage constructively with international experts and receive recommendations for further improvement.

The CRC session forms part of Ghana’s periodic reporting obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, reinforcing the country’s commitment to upholding international standards for child protection and development.
