Following concerns raised by the Executive Chairman of McDan Group, Dr. Daniel McKorley that government policies have not helped the private sector, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has fumed over the businessman’s remarks.
Gabby Otchere Darko said he is perplexed that McDan made that comment.
According to the prominent member of the ruling NPP, the entrepreneur has benefited from government support to make him own the largest salt concession in Africa.
He said past governments failed to make the salt concession commercialise but the NPP government brought it live so he is astonished the businessman has been ungrateful to the government.
“I am perplexed! This is from an entrepreneur who enjoyed the full support of govt to own the largest salt concession in Africa, with the capacity to produce some $2bn of salt annually; a project that for 45yrs various govts failed to commercialise. Aghast!,” Gabby Otchere Darko wrote on his X.
What McDan said:
Dr. Daniel McKorley popularly known as MacDan while speaking at the Ghana CEO Presidential Gala Dinner on November 7, 2024, lamented the difficulties businessmen in Ghana face.
According to him, if the government of Ghana can work closely with the businessmen in the country, there will be no need for an IMF bailout.
“Government policies are really not helping the private sector, that is where we are sitting right now and we have to be frank about it. If you want to do business in Ghana, then you have to be prepared. Being a Ghanaian to do business in Ghana, you have to be brave.” He said.
“Many times it is not that we don’t support our own. I have tasted it, I have slept with it and I am living with it. And it is quite dangerous and difficult. If Ghana will have 10 tough businessmen, how much did we take from the IMF? My business can generate $3.2 billion every year for the government.” McDan added.
