Former President of Ghana and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has refuted claims that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is against the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
Responding to a question on whether he supports the Free Senior High School Bill, during a media engagement on last Sunday, July 7, 2024, former president Mahama indicated that, the NDC is highly committed in improving the standard of education in the country and ensuring that every child enjoys the best of education, hence the launching of the Free SHS policy during his tenure as President of the land in 2015.
“My position on Free SHS is known, in 2015 I launched progress Free SHS, that’s what the constitution says, the only difference between us and the NPP is the approach.
“We thought that we should put the infrastructure in place and we should do the necessary preparation to absorb the Free SHS, so we started with day student, we made it free for day students and in the second year, we absorb 120,000 students on the Free SHS.” He said
During his tenure as President, Mahama launched the progressive Free SHS policy, which has since become a cornerstone of Ghana’s education system. He emphasized that the policy is here to stay and that the NDC remains committed to its implementation.
According to the former President, the issue of the NDC cancelling the Free SHS policy when voted back into power is a political gimmick being played by the NPP
“Nana Addo himself lauded me, if I have my phone here I would have google it, it said Nana Addo lauds Mahama’s Free SHS, its there UNESCO congratulated us for launching the Free SHS.
“How can the person who launched Free SHS be against Free SHS? and so its a political gimmick that is played by our opponent. Free SHS has come to stay.” John Dramani Mahama said.
