Aisha Huang, known as the ‘Galamsey Queen,’ has been found guilty of all charges brought against her by the state.
The Accra High Court handed down a four-year prison term to her on Monday, December 4, asaaseradio.com reports
Aisha Huang, standing trial for illegal mining operations without a license, facilitating unlawful participation in mining, and re-entering Ghana post-deportation, had consistently denied the charges and remained in prison custody.
Speaking in an interview monitored by Elvisanokyenews.com, Ashanti Regional Secretary of Small Scale Miners Association, Abdul Razak Alhassan the sentence is in the right direction but the most important thing is for the state to ensure that she serve the years according to the laws of the land.
“Sometimes we don’t know how the law works, even this sentence we don’t know whether she will serve all the years before leaving this country or not. But we are pleading with the government to ensure that she serve the four-year prison term to deter others” He stated.
Adding that a four-year sentence for a foreigner who has engaged in illegal activities for many years in the country is not enough.
“Some of us the four-year sentence is not enough but we believe it will serve as a deterrent to other foreign nationals and some Ghanaians whose activities contradict the mining Act.” He said.
“We don’t know whether the law of Ghana favors others or not, because if it was a Ghanaian, she would have been given at least 15 years imprisonment” He stated.
Amid the sentencing, Aisha Huang’s legal team advocated for a fine and deportation, considering her year-long incarceration during the trial.
