EC sets new date for Ashanti and North East regions’ Council of State Elections

The Electoral Commission has set Monday, 17th of February, 2025 as the new date for the Council of State Elections in two regions, namely North East and Ashanti.

“The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the General Public that the Council of State Elections in two regions, namely North East and Ashanti, will be re-run on Monday, the 17th of February, 2025.” The EC said in a press release signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman, Operations.

According to the Electoral Commission, the two regions are going for re-run of the Council of State Elections because the two top candidates in the North East region secured 6 votes each while the Ashanti Region witnessed disruption by thugs and it could not be counted.

“This is because there was a tie in the Election in the North East Region. The top two candidates each had six (6) votes. As such, the election has to be re-run. In the Ashanti Region, the Election was disrupted by thugs and could therefore not be conducted.” The release explained.

Adding that the Ghana Police Service and the National Security Taskforce have been notified to strengthen security on the 17th of February to prevent another disruption.

“The Commission has written to the Ghana Police Service and copied the National Security Taskforce to heighten security at the venues of the elections to prevent any disruptions.” Part of the release read.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Frank Abrokwa has been removed following the disruption of the Council of State Election.

Unknown thugs stormed the polling center and destroyed ballot boxes and scattered voting papers.
