NPP’s running mate in the 2024 general elections, and former Minister of Education and Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has openly admitted that the party lost the 2024 polls because it failed to listen to the concerns of citizens.

Speaking reflectively on the party’s defeat, Dr Opoku Prempeh said the past 10 months had revealed a “broken trust” between the government and the people, a fracture that significantly influenced the election outcome.

“One thing I’ve come to conclude in the last 10 months is that there was a broken trust from citizens to government. The trust that was broken had so much impact that we saw the result.”

The former minister explained that the NPP “didn’t listen enough” and made assumptions that ultimately distanced them from the realities voters were facing. According to him, the party governed during one of the worst global economic periods in recent history marked by severe health and economic shocks that toppled governments around the world.

“We didn’t listen enough. We assumed a lot of things we shouldn’t have assumed, and probably our purpose was a bit challenged. We had gone through the worst global economic climate, medically and economically or health-wise. Governments around the whole world had been toppled and changed.”

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh disclosed that the dramatic rise in global shipping costs as an example of the economic strain that affected households and businesses.

“The economic menu had changed dramatically. A container from China that cost 1,200, logistic-wise, had risen to 14,000. People’s lifetime savings had been wiped out.”

He added that the pandemic period saw unprecedented loss of life outside of war or military conflict.

“People had died in their droves, something that had never been seen before without a military crisis or World War. So a lot of things had happened.”
