The Techiman Forikromhene and Benkumhene of the Techiman Traditional Area, Okogyeman Kese Basahyia II, has cautioned the populace against insulting elders and people in authority with the excuse of democracy and freedom of speech.

Okogyeman Kese Basahyia II, says freedom of speech comes with corresponding responsibilities, and it should not be used as a tool for disrespecting and undermining those in positions of power.

he said every citizen may, accordingly, speak, write, and print with freedom, but shall be responsible for such abuses of this freedom as shall be defined by law and therefore we should be mindful with our utterances.

“We have to respect the authorities in our communities, people now talk anyhow due to democracy and that is not the best.

“Democracy doesn’t mean we should disrespect our elders and people in authority simply because we have the freedom of speech, not long ago a lady disrespected the Techiman Traditional Council due to her utterances, I also heard someone has spoken against Otumfour and all these does not speak well of us as a country.

“Although the constitution has given us the freedom of speech but that freedom of speech also comes with a corresponding responsibility which we should be very mindful of, you can’t just say anything simply because the constitution has granted you a freedom of speech.” Nana told the media

Okogyeman Kese Basahyia II, stressed that democracy and freedom of speech are important values in society, but they should be exercised with respect and consideration for others. He urged citizens to use their freedom of speech to contribute positively to society and to engage in constructive dialogue, rather than using it as a platform for insults and disrespect.
