The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC),Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has indicated that district local governments should have the right to manage and control their affairs effectively and efficiently, emphasizing the crucial role of district local governments in ensuring the well-being of citizens.
According to him, MMDCE’s and Assembly members have been rendered useless under the Nana-Addo led NPP government regarding development in various Municipalities and Districts, adding that the district local governance should be allowed to release pressure on the central government.
The chairman further stated that members at the local government level are really capable and just need to be supported and empowered to ensure the growth and development of various districts.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia speaking at a campaign tour to the Ejura Sekyeredumase Constituency of the Ashanti Region revealed that the District Assembly Common Fund has halted and no more going to the assemblies regarding development in the Districts.
“Under the current NPP government, contractors are sent from the Country’s Capital Town,Accra to carry out duties that could have been taken care of easily by MMDCE’s and Assembly members, making them useless”Mr. Nketia said.
“The NDC was the only government that cared about the well-being of Assembly members,”we provided them with motor bikes in our time to make their work easy especially in the rural areas”,he stated. Adding that it’s not surprising the voter turnout during the District Assembly Elections have been very low under the Nana-Addo led NPP government because they are rendered useless after elections.
He added that the NDC 2 will ensure that Assembly members are provided with cars to make their work more useful and efficient.
On the other hand,he mocked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for branding the recent DRIP machines that were acquired with Ghana’s money with posters of their members of parliament, stressing that that is a sign of poor and bad governance.
He therefore entreated Ghanaians to vote for the NDC to ensure freedom of the local government to improve development in the country.
