The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called on market women to desist from cooking in various markets to prevent possible fire outbreak.
DGO Amissah Josephine, in an interview with Nana Amakye Amakye on Classic FM’s Wonpatmu Tesen Show monitored by Elvisanokyenews.com revealed that, most of the fire outbreaks in our market places are as a result of cooking.
She therefore urged traders to prepare their foods before coming to market and stop preparing their food at the market to prevent any unforeseen circumstance
“Don’t start fires at the market in the name of cooking because the market is not a place for cooking, we keep telling the women to prepare their food at their various homes before they come to the market.
“You may decide to attend to a customer while cooking at the market and the unfortunate can happen so please, the use of cylinders or I should say cooking at the market should not be encouraged.” She said.
She said, not only would a designated place prevent food vendors and market women from cooking in their shops, but it would also serve as a check on dousing the fires should one leave it unattended.
“The appropriate thing is for the authorities to have a designated place for cooking in the market, because you cannot stop food vendors from cooking at the markets, so there is the need to find one place where all of them would cook, so that if someone forgets to put the fire off, others can easily detect and quench it,” she said.
She again urged residents to be cautious of the electrical appliances in our various homes, she said cylinder, and other electrical appliances should be properly used in our homes to prevent fire outbreaks.
“When you are done cooking at home, kindly turn off the burner before turning off the cylinder, if you turn off the burner, all the gas in the tube will go back to the cylinder but if you’re turn off the cylinder before turning off the burner, there can be a leakage which in turn may cause fire outbreak.
“The short cylinders must not be used in an enclosed area, it is best used outside because that kind of cylinders keeps expanding while in use so if it does not get enough ventilation, it may explode.” She explained.
