Former President John Dramani Mahama has said there is no basis should a passport be compared to a person holding Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
According to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), learning and education is the most important resource a human being can acquire so the comparison is like comparing apples to oranges which he jokingly said aluguntugui.
“Learning and education is the most important resource a human being can acquire. And if you have the PhD and you have the opportunity to travel, you will be among high value citizens in that country you have gone to. And so there is no basis, it is like comparing apples and Aluguntugui. And so that debate should not be taking place at all but it is taking place because of the crisis in which this government has plunged our country.” Mr. Mahama said.
Speaking at a public lecture organised by the Christian Service University at Kumasi under the theme ‘Sustainability of Democracy in Africa: The Ghanaian Experience,’ Mahama attributed the debate between a Dutch passport and PhD holder in Ghana to poor economic management by the NPP government.
He said, Corruption, nepotism and waste of natural resources by the Nana Addo and Bawumia led NPP government have plunged the country into crisis.
“Corruption, nepotism, rising debt, waste of national resources, impunity, and general criminality have become the hallmarks of Ghana’s current government. There is a widespread despair and anguish amongs our people leading to an active debate that I followed recently on our social media about whether securing a foreign passport to do menial jobs in Europe is better than holding a PhD in Ghana.”
“It is a reflection of the adversity into which our nation has been plunged. Otherwise, there is no basis for comparisons between a visa and a PhD.”
“A PhD is about learning and education, a visa is an opportunity to travel and reside somewhere. But we forget that where you are residing, there are people with PhDs too. And the comparison is not between their PhDs and the fact that you are residing in their country.”
The widespread debate on the valuability of PhD holders in Ghana and a Dutch passport came after a Ghanaian-Netherlands citizen claimed that his Dutch passport offers more opportunities than a Ghanaian PhD.
