President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced the increment of the producer price of cocoa from GH₵48,000 to GH₵49,600 per tonne, raising from GH₵3,000 to GH₵3,100 per bag.
This, according to the president, is to motivate cocoa farmers and restore their income and compete with others.
Announcing the new increment, Nana Addo stated that the decision is part of advice by the Producer Price Review Committee which found it necessary to ensure that farming is attractive and lucrative.
“For our dear cocoa farmer, on the advice of the Producer Price Review Committee, I announce an increase in the producer price of cocoa from GH₵48,000 to GH₵49,600 per tonne, which is increment of the price from GH₵3,000 to GH₵3,100 per bag. This is as a result of my instructions to the Minister to ensure that as the market changes, there are periodic reviews to restore farmer income.” President Akufo-Addo announced this at the National Farmers’ Day awards ceremony in Accra on Friday, November 8, 2024.
The President also indicated that he has instructed that periodic review should be conducted to restore farmer income.
According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is poised to promote the welfare of farmers in the country.
Nana Addo stated that agriculture is one of the pillars for national development and for that matter the government will pay attention to farmers and thereby, make farming attractive to the youth.
Meanwhile, a 70-year-old farmer from Sekyere Central district in the Ashanti Region, Nana Owusu Achiaw Brempong won the 2024 National Best Farmer.
Speaking at the event, Nana Owusu Achiaw mentioned the benefits of farming for national development and called on the government to invest in agriculture.
