The Chairperson of Parliament’s Appointment Committee and Member of Parliament for Akatsi South constituency, Bernard Ahiafor, has accused the Minority Leader and Ranking Member of the committee, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, of deliberately disrupting the vetting process of ministerial nominees.
Speaking onThe Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, February 3, which was keenly monitored by Elvisanokyenews.com, Ahiafor accused Afenyo-Markin of instructing his caucus members to deliberately activate their microphones during proceedings, causing interruptions that hindered the smooth flow of the vetting.
“You see the rule of the game is that before you speak into the microphone you need to catch the eye of the speaker or the chairman. Without that you put on the microphone and start speaking.
“That time I can attest to the fact that minority leader acts his side to put on the microphone and by putting on all the microphone, the nominee’s microphone will not work, my own will not work in an attempt to disrupt the vetting process.” He said.
Ahiafor further stated that while members of Parliament are entitled to raise questions and concerns, the disruptive behavior was uncalled for and went against the purpose of the vetting process.
When asked about his tendency to raise his voice during the vetting process, he explained that certain behaviors exhibited by some members of the committee were unexpected, necessitating his efforts to call them to order.
“It’s not a matter of shouting, but sometimes you sit down there, you don’t expect a member to behave in a particular way, and the member puts up that particular behavior.”
