The erstwhile Brong Ahafo Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in partnership with the Techiman Traditional Council, will co-host a public lecture on peaceful elections in a bid to ensure a peaceful and harmonious general election in 2024.

The event, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 16th July, 2024 at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Trinity Congregation in the Bono East Regional Capital, Techiman, aims to educate the populace on the importance of maintaining peace and unity in the country during the upcoming elections. The lecture will feature prominent speakers who will discuss the significance of peaceful elections and the potential consequences of violence or unrest.

The Executive Director of Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa and former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, will be the keynote speaker for the lecture.

The public lecture is open to all members of the community, and attendees are encouraged to come prepared with questions and engage in a constructive dialogue with the speakers.

The Director, Brong Ahafo Presbytery Ecumenical and Social Relations, Rev. John Amankwaa-Okrah, in an interview with Elvisanokyenews.com, explained that, the public lecture, which is under the theme “Advocacy for Peace and Security Before, During and After the General Elections 2024” is part of the numerous activities that church undertake every election year to remind the public on the need to preserve the peace in the country.

“The Presbyterian Church of Ghana is very determined to preach peace across the length and breadth of the country as we approach the 2024 general elections in order to preserve the peace we are currently enjoying in our country.

“This is an initiative that the church undertakes every election year and we will be holding the erstwhile Brong Ahafo event in Techiman, so on Tuesday, 16th June, 2024, we will hold a public lecture on peaceful elections.

“The main purpose of this public lecture is to educate the populace on the need to uphold and protect the peace in Ghana before, during and after the general elections.” He said.

Other speakers expected at the lecture are the Bono East Regional Minister, representative from the Techiman Traditional Council, the Bono East Regional Chief Imam, Bono East Electoral Commission, Bono East Regional Police Commander, Executive Secretary of the Bono East Peace Council and the Bono East Regional Director of NCCE.

The Brong Ahafo Presbytery and the Techiman Traditional Council hope that by organizing this public lecture, they can contribute to the ongoing efforts to promote a culture of peace and tolerance among Ghanaians. They believe that by educating the public on the importance of a peaceful election, they can help prevent any potential conflicts and ensure a smooth and successful electoral process.

Touching on the  reason for selecting Techiman as the host city, Rev. John Amankwaa-Okrah, said “I will say Techiman is a cosmopolitan community, we have a lot of people from different culture backgrounds and tribes living in Techiman, the city keeps developing at a rapid speed and during the last elections, there was some tension in Techiman that even resulted in the death of one person so that is one of the reasons we have chosen to hold this year’s public lectures on peace in Techiman.

“There have been several elections in Ghana and after each election, must go on, so there is no need for bloodshed or any form of violence as a result of an election, especially the upcoming December polls. We have partnered with the Traditional Council to hold this public lecture.”
