The Bono East Regional Police Command has foiled a planned robbery attack on the Kintampo–Buipe stretch of the Tamale highway, following an intelligence-led operation on last Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
According to police sources, the suspected robbers had regrouped and were preparing to launch an attack near Dawadawa on the night of Wednesday, November 5. Acting swiftly on intelligence, a team led by the Deputy Bono East Regional Police Commander, ACP Stephen Boadu, together with officers from the Regional Intelligence Unit, moved from Techiman to Kintampo in an unmarked vehicle to monitor the suspects’ movements.
At about 8:30 p.m., while on patrol between Dawadawa and Kwawampe, five armed men suddenly emerged from a nearby bush and opened fire on the police team in an attempt to rob. The officers responded, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The assailants later fled into the bush, but a tactical pursuit by the police led to the discovery of two suspects with gunshot wounds.
A search at the scene revealed a single-barrel shotgun, two live BB cartridges, six spent cartridges, two machetes, and several talismans believed to have been used by the gang for spiritual protection.
One of the injured suspects was identified as Sijaa, a notorious criminal reportedly linked to multiple robbery incidents along the Dawadawa–Buipe corridor. Both suspects were rushed to the Holy Family Catholic Teaching Hospital in Techiman but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation.
Meanwhile, police say efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects who managed to escape during the exchange. Authorities believe the fugitives may have sustained gunshot wounds and are appealing to all medical facilities, particularly within the Bono East Region, to be on alert and report anyone seeking treatment for fresh gunshot injuries to the nearest police station.
The Bono East Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of travelers and residents along major highways, urging the public to continue providing timely information to help combat crime across the region.
