Bono East: NRSA reports increase in road accidents for 2024 but fewer fatalities

The Bono East Regional Office of the National Road Safety Authority, has revealed that even though the number of recorded cases of accidents for 2024 increased with a difference of 38 as compared to the previous year 2023, the total number of deaths recorded reduced by 21 persons in the same year under review which is a good news.

According to Obed Antwi, the Operations Officer at the Regional Road Safety Authority, a total of 203 road accidents were recorded in 2024 as against 165 in 2023 while 81 persons were killed in 2024 as against 102 deaths in 2023 with 332 persons injured in 2024 as against 373 injuries in 2023.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Media in Techiman, Obed Antwi noted that within the year under review, their outfit recorded decline in pedestrian knockdowns, pedestrians injured and private vehicles involved in accidents but unfortunately recorded increase in fatal cases, commercial vehicles involved, motorcycles involved and pedestrians killed.

”In 2023, there were 165 reported cases, while in 2024, the number increased to 203, representing an increase of 38 cases. The total number of individuals injured in 2023 was 373, whereas in 2024, it decreased to 332, reflecting a reduction of 46 cases.

”In 2023, 19 individuals lost their lives in road accidents, compared to 18 in 2024. The total number of fatalities from all reported cases in 2023 was 102, which decreased to 81 in 2024, a difference of 21.” He stated

Obed Antwi concluded that it is regrettable that even a single life would be lost through road accident therefore motorists and pedestrians should be extra careful on our roads as the National Road Safety Authority will continue to educate the masses and fully enforce the laws of Ghana when necessary with a hope seeing a drastic reduction in all aspects of the statistics by the end of the year 2025.

“It was our wish to end the year without any fatalities, but we understand that not all road users adhere to our sensitization programs on road safety. This, unfortunately, resulted in the number of deaths recorded due to road accidents in 2024.

“However, we believed that persistent breaks resistance. Therefore we will continue our sensitization programs and enforce road usage laws. By so doing, we believe that road fatalities will reduce drastically in this year.

“I will plead with all and sundry to partake in our sensitization programs as they serve as a crucial reminder of the best road safety practices to prevent accidents.” He said.
