Former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah has described Ghana’s National Team, Black Stars of Ghana potentially playing home games in a neutral venue as a national embarrassment.
He said the country should consider playing home games outside Ghana in major tournaments, not Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
His comment comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew its approval of Baba Yara Sports Stadium due to poor football facilities.
In a post on his X, Stephen Appiah stated that the country must prioritize hosting its own games and protect the football pride.
“Playing a qualifier outside Ghana, except in a tournament, is a national embarrassment. We must prioritize hosting our own games and protect our football pride.” Appiah wrote.
Ghana is not the only African country that has been banned from playing football at home due to poor football facilities.
Some African countries who have currently been banned from playing home games are Djibouti, Chad, Niger, Eritrea, Gabon, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, São Tomé, Burundi.
Meanwhile, Sports Journalist, Saddick Adams believes Ghana could have used $250,000 to fix the Baba Yara Stadium tha spending over $500,000 to play games outside Ghana.
“The most important point is that we could have spent $250,000 to fix Baba Yara. $150,000 could do that but because our people are corrupt let me add $100,000. Now, if we fly them to Morocco, you will need to board a flight like $450,000, to play away again. A game that could have been played at home. Then we have another chartered flight at a cost of around $500,000, so the flight and feedings, hotels will cost around $600,000 but we could have fixed the Baba Yara Stadium with $250,000 permanently.” Saddick Adams said on GhOne TV.
“If you’re a sane person, you wouldn’t need me to tell you that what has transpired is something that should be overlooked.” He added.
