Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer, Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems has shot down claims that she became popular after being featured on Wizkid’s 2020 single “Essence”.
According to Tems, her breakthrough came through American singer, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter and at the time Beyonce team sent her email “Essence” was not out.
It was reported that Tems rose to prominence after being featured on Wizkid’s 2020 single “Essence”, which peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart following the release of the remix version with Justin Bieber.
But the Nigerian musician in an interview explained that it was Beyonce who changed her life.
She indicated that Beyonce’s email was a confirmation that she was doing a good job.
“The time Beyonce sent me an email, a lot of things were happening in that time so I was just like what is going on? My reaction was slow because it was more like confirmation to me that I was doing something.” Tems stated.
Tems added that her confidence of doing the type of music she is doing rose after Beyonce’s team emailed her.
“Who am I? I was in Chevron and that time ‘Essence’ was not even out. This was before ‘Essense’ dropped. So it made me think that I am not made for making this type of music.” She emphasized.
