Ghanaian female musician, Francisca Gawugah popularly Sista Afia has said she wished she was born a male.
According to her, being a female musician and a celebrity is a tough job. Saying she would have gone far more than where she is in her music career if she was a male.
When asked on Girls Aloud Podcast, how does it feel being a female musician and a celebrity? Sista Afia responded “It is the toughest job ever. Being a female is crazy, sometimes I wish I was a male. Because I feel like maybe my songs or the way I want to be will move faster than being a female. Because sometimes people regard us differently. It didn’t start now, it has been there since the foundation of the earth.”
The singer lamented that the perception people have about women in the music industry hinder their progress.
“If you want to even work with somebody, the mentality is different. Men don’t want to get closer to us because people might think that something is going on and is not easy. I have just realized that being a female in the music space is not easy. Not only in Ghana is everywhere but gradually, gradually we are pressing on.” Sister Afia stated.
According to the songwriter, she has achieved something but still feels she can do much better.
“My expectations are still high, I feel like I can do much better, I can elevate even much higher. But now from where I come from till now I can say that I have accomplished something. People love my name and my songs that tell me that I am doing well so I think that is the most important thing. Being known and people patronising your work is a great achievement.” She added.
