Road Minister and Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has provided clarity on what qualifies a road to be classified as a ‘Big Push’ project.
He explained that major trunk roads connecting regions and the national capital are the primary focus.
Agbodza cited examples across the country. The Western Corridor, he said, will run from Wenchi through Swala to Wa, while the Eastern Corridor will cover Asikuma to Bimbila. The Central Corridor, on the other hand, links Accra to Kumasi, including ring roads around Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale, and other key areas.
“It was selected and then discussed at various stages. The principle is that if you take our country, there are major trunk roads that actually interconnect regions and the national capital.
“For instance, the Western Corridor, currently the west section will be from Wenchi through Swala to Wa, and then from the east, you see Bolga all the way to Wa.
“Eastern Corridor roads will be Asikuma to Bimbila. The Central Corridor is Accra–Kumasi, and then the ring roads around Kumasi, Sunyani, and Tamale and others.”
The minister also highlighted critical bridges, including the Dambai Bridge, a long-awaited project finally undertaken during the administration of former President Mahama.
“Some critical bridges for instance, the Dambai Bridge which has been mentioned almost from the time you and I were kids, and finally President Mahama decided that it should be done.”
He further mentioned stalled projects like the Suame Interchange, initially started with a commercial loan but halted due to Ghana’s debt situation. “
“Currently, the Suame Interchange, which was started as a commercial loan in Parliament but which also stalled because our debt situation made it difficult for the government to draw down at the time, so the project stalled but it’s now captured as part of Big Push so that we can allocate a dedicated fund to get those things done.
