President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has assured the Christian Council of Ghana that he will sign the Family Values Bill into law once Parliament properly debates, amends, endorses and passes it in accordance with constitutional requirements.
Addressing the Council during a courtesy call, President Mahama explained that by law, any bill that is not assented to before the end of a parliamentary term automatically expires. This means the previous Family Values Bill cannot be revived and must be reintroduced in the new Parliament.
Reaffirming his administration’s stance, he said the government’s position on marriage, gender and family remains clear and unchanged.
“The position of my government is that marriage is between man and woman, aperson’s gender is determined at birth and then also that the family is a foundation of our nation. That is our position.”
He noted that the government’s values fully align with those of the Christian Council.
“So there are no questions or equivocations about what we believe, I believe that we are completely aligned with the Christian council in terms of your belief.”
President Mahama added that he agrees with the Speaker of Parliament that the bill should be relaid, debated and amended where necessary to reflect the will of the Ghanaian people.
“We agree with the speaker to relay the bill and let Parliaments debate it and if there are any amendments or whatever that have to be done. If the Parliaments of the people of Ghana endorse the bill, vote on it and pass it and it comes to me as president, I will sign it.”
