Former Ashanti Bekwai Member of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, says his decision to return to active party duty has helped stabilize the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at a crucial moment in its internal reorganization.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, the former Deputy Speaker of Parliament revealed that he had deliberately withdrawn from political life after the 2025 elections and had largely declined to engage in party affairs.
He explained that his post-election period was intended to be a full retirement from active politics, during which he avoided commentary and participation in party matters, except for a few issues that were personal to him.
“I totally recused myself from any political activity after 2025. I declined to speak on any matter. Very few matters which were personal to me otherwise, I was taking my retirement very seriously.”
Mr. Osei Owusu noted that his resolve to remain withdrawn changed when he was invited to chair the party’s National Conference, a responsibility he felt could not be ignored given the circumstances facing the NPP.
“But the first one was an invitation to chair the National Conference. I asked myself, would it be fair to abandon the party? So I accepted to do it with a conviction that if it must be done, it must be done well.” He explained.
According to him, his primary focus was to ensure that the conference was conducted in a manner that gave every participant a sense of ownership, fairness, and inclusion, adding that he is satisfied with how the process was managed.
“There are times that if strong people don’t stand up, the whole structure may collapse, so I accepted and I decided to stand up.” he said.
The former Deputy Speaker acknowledged that the task had not been easy, citing intense pressures and difficult decisions that had to be taken by the organising committee in the interest of fairness and unity within the party.
“Decisions have had to be taken against all kinds of pressures, but once we are satisfied at the committee that this is what we think will bring fairness, clear opportunity for everyone to feel at home, this is the way we are going,” he noted.
He added that despite the challenges, the committee has succeeded in rebuilding confidence among party members, helping to steady the NPP at a time when strong leadership and firm decisions were required.
“So far, it’s not been easy, but I think that we have managed to build sufficient confidence among the party people.”
