The Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured newly deployed medical doctors that the government’s decision to post 700 doctors nationwide is aimed at ensuring fairness in healthcare delivery, not to punish anyone.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement, the Minister explained that the deployment forms part of a national effort to address inequality in the distribution of health professionals across the country.
He revealed that government spending on health sector compensation remains a priority. “In respect to the workforce development, out of the 34 billion Ghana City, some 16.7 billion has been allocated as compensation and so we’ll continue to pay the 13,500 nurses we put on the payroll this year alone.”
The Minister of Health revealed that H.E. John Dramani Mahama has directed that medical doctors be posted to districts where their services are urgently needed.
“We are distributing not less than 700 medical doctors across the length and breadth of this country and it is the president has directed that we send these medical doctors to where they are needed most, especially the districts.”
He expressed concern over the heavy concentration of medical doctors in the Greater Accra Region
“I’m sorry to say that we have more than almost 50 % of the medical doctors we have in this country in the greater Accra nd therefore, let me take this opportunity to appeal to the medical officers we are posting at the moment not to see this policy as punishment, but as an attempt for equitable distribution of the workforce we have in this country.”
The Minister further assured the newly posted doctors that government is committed to improving their working conditions.
“Of course, government will also be seeking to create that congenial atmosphere for you to deliver your work.”
