The Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, says the landslide victory won by his party in the last presidential elections is both a moment of celebration and a powerful reminder that Ghanaians will not hesitate to punish any government that fails to deliver good governance.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that although the scale of the victory was remarkable, it did not come as a surprise, as internal polling had consistently projected a strong win for the party. He said the team had no doubt that they would win the presidential election but admitted that the final margin exceeded their expectations.
“It was not our first victory in elections. Yes, there was something to be said about the magnitude of the victory. Let me indicate that our internal polling had already suggested that this was the outcome to expect.
“We had no doubt whatsoever that we were going to win the presidential elections. The margin surprised us a bit, even though, from time to time, we received information that things were shifting and that we were doing well. Still, we had to wait for the day itself to be certain that the result had been achieved.” He said
He noted that while the victory was overwhelming, it was also humbling because it reflected a clear message from the Ghanaian electorate. According to him, citizens had reached a point where they would no longer tolerate bad governance and were prepared to punish it severely, as seen in the electoral defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He stated that public dissatisfaction with economic mismanagement, widespread hardship, and governance failures played a major role in how voters made their choices. He cited the collapse of the economy, corruption, misuse of public resources, and what he described as the arrogance of power as key reasons Ghanaians rejected the previous administration.
According to him, the victory comes with heightened expectations and a responsibility to demonstrate integrity, accountability, and improved leadership.
“Although it was an overwhelming victory, it was also a humbling one for us because it showed that the Ghanaian people had reached a point where they were not going to tolerate any form of bad governance and were willing to punish it severely — and that is exactly what they did to the NPP.
“The signs were clear. Ghanaians were unhappy with the way they had governed. The total collapse of the Ghanaian economy, which had plunged millions into hardship, was something that could not be forgiven.
“The general levels of bad governance, corruption, blatant theft of public resources, arrogance of power, and all the other ills of government had clearly affected the way people voted. So, for us, even as we revelled in the victory and celebrated, it served as a cautionary reminder to do better.” He stated
