The former Member of Parliament for Manhyia North constituency in the Ashanti region, Collins Owusu Amankwah has revealed the pivotal role AngloGold Ashanti mines play in the development of the country.
He said among other things, AngloGold Ashanti contributed to the stabilization of the local currency, cedi so Ghanaians will resist any attempt to stop their operations in Obuasi.
“The mining activities in Obuasi (AngloGold Ashanti) started way back in 1897, many years ago and mining started in Obuasi the NDC bad governance closed AngloGold and the NPP came and worked hard and brought it back to operation. If Ghana, our cedi and other things can be stabilized, the role AngloGold plays maybe people don’t know, so anybody who will make an attempt to stop the AngloGold Ashanti operation, the country will resist.” He said this on Peace FM.
Hon. Collins Owusu Amankwah’s comment comes after some alleged illegal miners in Obuasi clashed with the Military personnel protecting the AngloGold Ashanti mines leading to several deaths and destructions of properties.
Some suggested that AngloGold Ashanti mines should be stopped operation but the former legislature who condemned the conduct of the Military also blamed the NDC executives for negatively advising their supporters to invade the AngloGold mines.
“Because of the bad advice the NDC executives gave to their supporters led to the recent clash. Do you know the arrangement on AngloGold gold trade? It is different from other mining companies in this country.” He said.
According to him, the NDC supporters have engaged in several violence activities after the former president John Dramani Mahama was declared winner of the 2024 general elections.
