Social media users have attacked former president Barack Obama over his comment about Independence Day celebrations in the United States.
July 4 is a special day for Americans as the day is celebrated with huge joy since it marks the US Independence in 1776.
In a short message for the Day celebration, Obama indicated that 4th July is about celebrating the big, bold, inclusive experiment that is our American democracy which should not be taken for granted.
“The Fourth of July is about celebrating the big, bold, inclusive experiment that is our American democracy. And it has always been an experiment. Our democracy has never been guaranteed, which means we can’t take it for granted. We need to keep fighting for it, keep improving it, and keep making sure it reflects the better angels of our nature instead of the worst. That, more than anything, is what America is all about.” Obama wrote.
The message of the former president did not go well with some Americans, especially members of the Republican party.
One users said “We aren’t a Democracy. We’re a Constitutional Republic. “Democracy” under this Administration has become “Whatever we can do to keep ourselves in power”.
Some also argued that United States is a Constitutional Republic not Democracy.
“The United States is a Constitutional Republic. I know this is hard concept to grasp for someone born in Kenya.” Another one said.
“America is a constitutional republic, not a democracy. We don’t go by mob rule. We go by what’s right. And our current government that’s abandoned our border, crashed our economy and engaged in pointless war isn’t right. We need President Trump. He’ll get us back on track.” One X user stated.
