President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has instructed the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to suspend the enforcement of Mining in Forest Reserve Regulations.
The suspension of Mining in Forest Reserve forms part of government efforts to fight against illegal mining (galamsey) that has caused destruction of water bodies and environment.
The instructions are in response to a press release issued by Organized Labour on 7th October, 2024 calling for an immediate halt to illegal mining (galamsey) in and around water bodies and forest reserves.
In a statement signed by the Director of Communications, Office of the president said “The president has instructed the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation along with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to suspend the enforcement of the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations, 2023 (L.I. 2462) with immediate effect.”
The president also directed the Minister of Defence to deploy additional forces to intensify the ongoing “Operation Halt”, which aims to curb illegal mining activities.
“The president has directed the Minister of Defence to deploy additional forces to intensify the ongoing “Operation Halt”, which aims to curb illegal mining activities. The operation will be bolstered by the deployment of naval bolts on polluted river bodies to ensure the immediate cessation of all mining activities, legal or illegal, in and around these water bodies.” Part of the statement read.
Adding that ” In a bid to enhance legal action against illegal mining activities, four (4) dedicated courts have been already established. The president has further directed the Attorney General to work with the Chief Justice to increase the number of courts handling cases related to illegal mining.”
Following these assurances from the government, the Organised Labour has suspended its highly anticipated nationwide strike.
Many stakeholders and groups have raised concerns about the effects of illegal mining activities in the country.
