Some residents of Akrobi, a farming community in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region have made a passionate appeal to the Wenchi Municipal Assembly through the Middle Belt Development Authority to prioritize the completion of a toilet facility that has been abandoned for the past 7 years.
The partially constructed toilet block was initiated by the assembly in 2015 to provide much-needed sanitation infrastructure for the community. However, work on the project stalled after the initial construction, leaving the facility unusable.
The abandoned toilet facility was part of the $1 million per constituency promise the NPP made prior to the 2016 general elections, but residents of Akrobi are yet to benefit from the much touted promise to help eliminate open dedication.
The residents explained that the lack of a functional public toilet has left untold suffering on them which, according to them, poses serious risks to the community’s health and sanitation. They are now pleading with the municipal authorities to allocate the necessary resources to complete the long-abandoned project.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, the Unit Committee Chairman at Akrobi, Stephen Asante explained that the abandoned toilet facility was part of projects funded by the One Million US Dollar per Constituency initiative.
“I plead with the authorities, the toilet facility is almost complete, it’s left with the construction of a manhole, although we have decided to construct the manhole ourselves but there are some petty things that the building needs for it to function as intended.”
“The toilet facility has now turned into a dumping site, so we will plead with the MCE to do something about it, because it’s very bad for a project that cost the state millions of Cedis to go to waste like that.”
“We are all part of Ghanaians, we also voted for the government in power so we are pleading with the government to help in completing the toilet facility for us” Stephen Asante said
He disclosed this during a communal labor organized by the Assembly Member for the area.
