The Supreme Court has ruled that Parliament should allow the 4 Members of Parliament whose seats were declared vacant to represent their constituencies and continue their duties.
The Supreme Court issued the stay of execution on Friday, 18th October, 2024 after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament filed an application to seek court intervention on the Speaker of Parliament’s ruling.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin on Thursday, 17th October, 2024 officially declared four parliamentary seats vacant ahead of the general elections after the four MPs declared their intention to contest as Independent.
The four Parliamentary seats are: NDC’s Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of Amenfi Central constituency, Andrew Amoakoh Asiamah of Fomena, Kojo Asante, NPP MP for Suhum in the Eastern Region, and NPP’s Cynthia Morrison of Agona West constituency.
Reacting to the Supreme Court ruling, Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin urged his colleagues as well as the Speaker of Parliament to abide by the court ruling.
“The whole of last night we didn’t sleep, I myself being a practitioner of a court, we made sure we put together a solid case and this afternoon we had justice. Now those NDC people who are claiming (that they are now the majority in parliament), if they know the law, they should now face us with the law. This is the Majority Leader speaking.” He said.
“We said until the matter is determined, we are not going to parliament and that we will abide by the ruling of the court. Today the court has determined the matter and has ordered the parties to file the necessary processes before the final determination of the matter. So we expect our colleagues and all those involved in this matter to respect the law inccluding the Right Honourable Speaker.” Afenyo-Markin stated.
