Ministry of Foreign Affairs refutes “diplomatic tension” between Ghana and Burkina Faso claims by Mahama

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has refuted allegations made by former president John Dramani Mahama that the recent statement by president Akufo-Addo has caused diplomatic tension between the Republic of Ghana and the Republic of Burkina Faso.

The NDC flagbearer claimed that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s recent commentary and engagement with the United States government have affected the relationship between the two countries.

In a press release dated August 10, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mr. Mahama’s claims of “diplomatic tension” are wholly unfounded and lack any substantial evidence or merit.

“The Ministry respectfully refutes the allegations made by the former President regarding the purported strained relations between our country and the Republic of Burkina Faso. Such claims of “diplomatic tension” are wholly unfounded and lack any substantial evidence or merit.” The Ministry said.

“Imdeed, under the leadership of H.E. the President, our diplomatic efforts have consistently been directed towards fostering constructive and respectful relations with all nations including Burkina Faso. It is recalled that a ministerial visit to Burkina Faso in December 2022, followed by a visit of H. E. the president in 2023, received the highest-level of courtesies and hospitality, and reinforced the commitment of the two fraternal countries to build stronger bonds of cooperation across all fields, for the mutual benefit of the two peoples and our region. Cooperation in the field of security remains crucial in our exchanges. The following examples of our cooperation, among others, underscore the strength of our relations.” The release added.

“The border commission of both countries composed of institutions such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lands Commission, the Police, and Customs among others have been working closely on border related matters. Additionally, National Electricity Company of Burkina Faso (SONABEL Power Company) has been working closely with the counterpart Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the area of power generation.” Part of the press release stated.

“Furthermore, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority has established a presence in Burkina Faso to facilitate the transport of goods from the Tema Harbour to Burkina Faso. Regular exchanges between the Chamber of Commerce of both countries also confirm the strength of our cooperation. A seven (7) member delegation from the Burkinabe Ministry of Territorial Administration and Security purposely closed Ghana for their working visit in July 2024 to learn from Ghana’s best practices in the area of Forensic Science and Police Laboratory; and. Ghana continues to be a preferred destination for Burkinabe students to learn the English language.” The Ministry stressed.
