KMA selects 14 youth groups for Climate Change campaign

As part of measures to tackle climate change, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has selected fourteen (14) youth groups for the climate change campaign.

The groups are beneficial to KMA and Bloomberg Philanthropies’ agenda for climate change in Kumasi.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly received $50,000 from their partner, Bloomberg Philanthropies to fund innovative proposals from young residents aged 15-24 to address climate change challenges.

The money is part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies for Kumasi’s participation in the “Youth Climate Action Fund.” after they announced partnership with the KMA in May, 2024.

The selected groups are Agritradehub, Earth Guardians, Ghana Association of Students Planners/ KNUST Sustainable Green Future Club,  PlantO and Dabethon Group.

The rest included, Climate Action Network, Team Sustinere, The Green Guardians of Kumasi, Akwatia Line Scrap Sellers Association, Adoato Executive Club, Center Youth and Literacy Development and Responsibilities Initiative Ghana with two separate but usable proposals.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Samuel Pyne said effective utilization of the funds  would give the Assembly a chance to increase $100,000 to $150,000.

“Let’s all be focused and ensure that the funds are properly utilized. The Assembly stands a chance to get $100,000 to $150,000 if we use the money carefully and achieve the target.” Sam Pyne said this when he presented certificates and cheques to the beneficiaries of the Youth Climate Action Fund at the KMA’s Conference Room on August 7, 2024.

The Mayor expressed optimism that the youth groups would not disappoint the Assembly.

To ensure judicious use of the fund, he announced that a monitoring team would visit recipients to assess progress, indicating that microgrant payments would be made in tranches upon authorities’ satisfaction with work done from now until the end of September 2024.

A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Planning, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mr. Prince Anokye explained that the youth group were selected based on parameters set by the KMA and Bloomberg Philanthropies and expressed confidence in the project’s success.

Miss Rhodaline Asare Odame, lead person for Earth Guardians with the mandate to segregate waste, expressed her appreciation to the KMA and Bloomberg Philanthropies for the financial support to minimize the impact of climate change in Kumasi and Ghana as a whole.
