The management of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has denied that the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has been terminated.

In a notice signed by the Chairman of UCC’s Governing Council, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, it alleged that “Pursuant to your letter of appointment dated 17th June 202, the University Council appointed you as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast for a period of four (4) years with effect from 1st August 2020.”

“Please note that the purported renewal/extension of your appointment as Vice-Chancellor at the Council’s meeting on the 28th of July 2023, for a term of two (2) years effective 1st August 2024, is void and consequently same is revoked as it breaches the University’s Statutes on renewal of appointment of the Vice-Chancellor.”

But the management indicated that the supposed letter was fake.

“The Management of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has come across a letter purported to have been written and signed by the Chairman of the University Council, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, terminating the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong.”

“Management wishes to state unequivocally that: 1. Council has not met to discuss or take such a decision and that, at its last meeting held on Tuesday, 30th July, 2024, records available indicate that matters discussed and decided upon did not include the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure.” The Management said.

“The University community and the general public are, therefore, entreated to disregard the publication,” part of the statement issued by the management of UCC reads.

Meanwhile, a resident of Kasoa in the Awutu Senya East Municipal District of the Central Region of Ghana, John Mevemeo, has filed a lawsuit against the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong.

John Mevemeo believes it is against Article 199(1) of the Constitution and statutes 8.15 and 8.16 of the UCC statutes 2016 for Prof. Boampong to remains renewal as Vice Chancellor  of the University after July 31, 2024, when his tenure of office comes to an end.
