Majority’s silence on CETAG strike action worried – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has chastised the Majority side for not showing concern about the strike action by members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).

According to the minority, academic activities at public colleges of education remain at a standstill due to the strike action but CETAG but the majority has failed to call on the government to fulfill its obligations to the Teachers of our public Colleges of Education.

“Majority side of Parliament, if they are minded and worry about education, should be calling on the government to meet its obligations to the Teachers of our public Colleges of Education. The teachers of Public Colleges of Education have been on strike today for twelve (12) days. Teaching and learning have come to a stand still in our Colleges of Education all because the government is failing to meet its obligations to the teachers of the Public Colleges of Education.” Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee in Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak said during a press conference.

Members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) early June declared indefinite strike for the government to comply with the agreed arbitral awards, including payment of an additional month’s salary for duties performed by CETAG members in 2022.

The strike action has halted academic activities at public colleges of education.

But the Member of Parliament for Builsa South said majority silence on the strike action is unfair.

“This is what we expert the Majority Leaders and his side to take up. The majority leader and his side should be worried about the fact that the government owns WAEC and because of that WAEC is struggling to find resources so that it can properly organize this year’s BECE exam which could commence on the 8th of next month (July).” He said.

According to him, the majority claim that the government has released GH¢80 million to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) is false.

Dr. Clement Apart claimed the government has only paid GH¢47 million.

“That is what they should be worried about rather than telling the government to pay WAEC the full GH¢80 million . Government has only paid GH¢47 million and yet the same majority has lied to Ghanaians that the government has paid GH¢80  million which is untrue. These are the matters that they should be worried about.” He said.
