Kenyan President, William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap Ruto has said he will not sign the 2024 Finance Bill and that the Bill should be withdrawn.
Kenya saw deadly protests on Tuesday, 25th June, 2024 following the passage of Finance Bill 2024 by Parliament.
Addressing the nation, president Ruto stated that the people of Kenya have expressed their dissatisfaction of the Bill and for that matter he has listened to their concerns to ensure peace and stability in the country.
“Consequently, having reflected on the continuing conversation around the content of Finance Bill 2024, and listen keenly to the people of Kenya, who have say they want nothing to do with these Finance Bill 2024, I concede, and therefore, I will not sign the 2024 Finance Bill and it shall subsequently be withdrawn and I have agreed with these members that that become our collective position” Ruto said.
He added that the progress of the country is at his heart so anything that will bring Kenya down will not be tolerated.
According to reports, this is the first deadly protest in the East Africa country.
President Ruto therefore consoled the families of those who lost their loved ones in the deadly protest.
“Following the passage of the bail, the country witnessed widespread expression of dissatisfaction with the bill passed. Regrettably resulting in the loss of lives, destruction of properties and disaggregation of constitutional institutions. On my own behalf and on behalf of these members and many other Kenyans, I send my condolences to the families of those who lost their loved once in this very unfortunate manner.” He said.
The president vowed to tackle corruption and other factors that will affect the development of the country.
Many countries have reached out to the leaders in the country to bring lasting solutions to the problem.
