What happened to me should not happen to any of my successors – Domelevo reacts to extension of Auditor General

Former Auditor-General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo has reacted to the extension of Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu contract for another two years.

Domelevo said the extension of the contract is in line with the constitution and it is good that the Auditor-General is serving his term accordingly.

Speaking in an interview with Joynews monitored by Elvisanokyenews.com Mr. Domelevo who was asked to proceed on leave in 2020 stated that he didn’t want any of his successors to experience the unconstitutional treatment he went through.

“I say congratulations to him and like I stated earlier, I don’t think what happened to me should happen to any of my successors and I think his contract extension is in the line of the law.” He said.

President Akufo-Addo on June 29, 2020, directed former Auditor-General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo to proceed on his 123 accumulated leave days from 2017 to 2019.

The Supreme Court subsequently declared the directive of the president as unconstitutional.

But according to Mr. Domelevo, he believes the president forcefully asked him to proceed on leave because he was disturbing their government. Adding that he thought the president was not happy about the way he was working.

“The president or the presidency did not feel that I was working the way they wanted me to work or more or less I was disturbing their government that is why they took that decision but that does not mean that it should be extended to  my successors” He stressed.

A notice to the staff of the Auditor-General’s department said“I wish to bring to the information of all staff that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, has extended the tenure of the office of the Auditor General, Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu for the next two years”

Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu was due for statutory retirement on August 1, 2024.

“Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu was due for statutory retirement on August 1, 2024. The Service extends its congratulations to our Auditor General on the extension of his appointment.” The notice added.
