Former president and National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has lamented over the current cost of Hajj fares in the country.
He said the current GH¢75,000.00 cost of Hajj fares as compared to his regime which were more affordable at GH¢11,900.00 is disheartening.
According to him, the significant financial burden for many regular Muslims to embark on this spiritual journey leaves many with no option but to seek alternative routes for their pilgrimage which resulted in loss of lives and others.
“The current cost of the Hajj pilgrimage is undeniably a significant financial burden, making it challenging for many regular Muslims to embark on this spiritual journey. During my time as President, Hajj fares were much more affordable at GH¢11,900.00. Seeing the cost rise to GH¢75,000.00 is disheartening, leaving many with no option but to seek alternative routes for their pilgrimage.” Mahama said this when he joined the Ahlussuna Wal-Jamah group for their Eid prayers.
The former president stated that Hajj pilgrimage has more significance so it is imperative to make it accessible to all.
Mr. Mahama promised that the next NDC government will make the Hajj pilgrimage more affordable for the Ghanaian Muslim community to ensure that no one is left behind like the current situation.
“I fully understand the significance of the Hajj pilgrimage and the importance of making it accessible to all. Earlier today, when I joined the Ahlussuna Wal-Jamah group for their Eid prayers, I stated that when given the opportunity to lead our country once again, I will not only work tirelessly but also strategically to make the Hajj pilgrimage more affordable for the Ghanaian Muslim community, ensuring that no one is left behind.” Mahama assured.
He urged the Ghanaian Muslim community to use Eid celebration to pray for peace and prosperity for Ghana as the country is heading to General elections.
“Let us continue to celebrate Eid and pray for peace and prosperity for our nation. Eid Mubarak to all!” Mahama appealed.
According to a report, more than four thousand (4,000) Ghanaian pilgrims are in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj ritual.
