Dreamers are living in fear; pass a permanent legislative solution for Dreamers – Barack Obama to Congress

Former President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has once again called on Congress to pass a permanent legislative solution for Dreamers.

According to the  first African-American president in United States history who served as the 44th President, Congress failed to pass a permanent legislative solution for Dreamers for more than twelve years, dreamers are living in fear and uncertainty that they could be repatriated to their countries.

Obama said some dreamers are now serving their communities as teachers, doctors, lawyers, when his administration announced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.

“Twelve years ago today, my administration announced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, giving undocumented immigrants who were brought to this country as children a pathway to citizenship.” The former US president said.

“Today, most of the original Dreamers are grown. They’re serving their communities as teachers, doctors, lawyers, and having children of their own. But because the program that offered that protection remains temporary, they’re also living in fear of being sent back to a country many of them can’t even remember.” Obama added.

The Dream Act aims to provide a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children. This proposal would offer these young people, often called “Dreamers,” a chance to earn permanent residency.

Obama acknowledged the efforts of Joe Biden administration which has made DACA recipients have access to federal programs, including getting health care through the Affordable Care Act but he stressed that until a permanent legislative solution for Dreamers is passed, they will continue to live under uncertain conditions.

“The Biden Administration has made it easier for DACA recipients to access federal programs, including getting health care through the Affordable Care Act. But until Congress acts, Dreamers will continue to live under a cloud of uncertainty.” He said.

“That’s why I’m calling on Congress once again to pass a permanent legislative solution for Dreamers – one that offers them a pathway to citizenship and makes our immigration system fairer, more efficient, and more just.” Obama stressed.

Obama’s call comes after a court ruled that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is unlawful and in violation of the Administrative Procedure Act.
