The Bono East Regional Minister, Hon. Kwasi Adu-Gyan, has urged all and sundry to fully partake in the Green Ghana initiative, calling it a positive step towards protecting the environment.
According to him, the initiative which was introduced in 2021 by President, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, aligns with one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which demonstrates its importance in promoting a greener and more sustainable future for all.
“We have the United SDG, and the Green Ghana Day falls under the SDG 15 which says, we shall protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt biodiversity loss.
“It is also to demonstrate our national and global commitments relating to protecting and use of land and forest resources.” Hon. Adu-Gyan told the gathering
He said this during the commemoration of this year’s Green Ghana Day under the theme, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow.”
Touching on the theme for this year’s Green Ghana Day, Hon. Kwasi Adu-Gyan said, “The theme for this year’s Green Ghana Day commemoration, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow, underscores the indispensability of our forest ecosystem, for the very survival of the present and future generation.
“The theme further reiterates the important role our forests play in releasing oxygen which are very essential for human life, while absorbing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases which are harmful from the environment” He said
The Bono East Regional Minister, further explained that, we as citizens of this country have a responsibility to protect our environment and forest reserves. He however bemoaned how our generation is failing to uphold that responsibility and called on all and sundry to fully embrace the Green Ghana initiative to help protect the country’s ecosystem.
“God gave us a responsibility to take good care of our environment, our forefathers did their part in protecting the environment, when I was growing up our forestry were very green, from Jema, Babato, Kyerena, Dawada and its adjourning communities, our forestry were very green but we can’t say same now.
“Bono East had one of the best forestry in the country and I’m talking about 1970 to 1978 but today when I was coming from Techiman, I was very sad because it seems we are destroying our forestry, we are not following the footsteps of our forefathers and failing the next generation by destroying our ecosystem.
“That is why the Ghana Government, under his Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, has initiated the Green Ghana Day, so we are here today to do the right thing in order to protect our forest reserves and environment.” Hon. Kwasi Adu Gyan said.
The Bono East Regional Minister emphasized the significance of the Green Ghana Initiative in achieving sustainable development goals, particularly in the context of environmental protection.
