Former president John Dramani Mahama has pledged to establish a pension scheme for commercial drivers in his next administration to provide relief to them when they retire.
According to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), it is the duty of the government to ensure that drivers have social security in their golden years, and that he will tirelessly work towards this goal when given the opportunity to govern the country again in the December 7 polls.
During a meeting with executives of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) as part of his ongoing engagement with various groupings ahead of the 2024 elections, Mr. Mahama indicated that pension scheme for commercial drivers has been a long-standing priority of the NDC and therefore, he will ensure that it will become reality during his upcoming presidency.
“One of the key issues I brought to the table was the establishment of a pension scheme for our hardworking commercial drivers. This has been a long-standing priority for my party, and I am unwavering in my commitment to making this a reality during my upcoming presidency. It is our duty to ensure our drivers have social security in their golden years, and I will tirelessly work towards this goal.” Mahama said.
He stressed that GPRTU is the backbone of road transportation in Ghana so it is important for every government to hear their concerns and find a lasting solution to it.
“The GPRTU is the backbone of road transportation in Ghana, and it was important for me to hear their concerns and ideas.” Mahama emphasized.
Touching on modernising transport terminals and lorry parks, the former president stated that GPRTU and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) could partner to build and maintain these facilities and share revenue from their management.
“We also discussed modernising transport terminals and lorry parks. The GPRTU could partner with MMDAs or private investors to build and maintain these facilities and share revenue from their management.” Mahama noted.
He also assured to work with the executives of GPRTU to enhance the welfare and conditions of commercial drivers in Ghana.
“I eagerly anticipate our continued work together to enhance the welfare and conditions of our drivers. Together, we will forge a brighter future for Ghana’s transport industry.” He assured.
