TMPC holds maiden workshop for traditional medicine practitioners

The Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC), under the auspices of Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (GHAFTRAM) under the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), held a workshop for traditional medicine practitioners on May 10, 2023 in the Ashanti Region, as part of its mission to optimize healthcare by facilitating the holistic integration of Traditional Medicine and it practitioners into the national healthcare system through education, training, research, product development, advocacy, community engagement and service delivery.

Dr. Anastacia Yerenche, the Director of Traditional and Alternative Medicine who doubles as the Acting Registrar for Traditional Medicine Practice Council has expressed her satisfaction over the role (MoH) is  playing, with the establishment of (TMPC), to train traditional practitioners to develop, advance and give the best healthcare to their clients in traditional and alternative medicine in the country.

According to her, the council is promulgated under an act which is act 575, that govern all the indigenous Medicine Practitioners in the country, which on the other hand, same act 575 help to Regulate, Control, and promote Traditional Medicine Practice and it Practitioners.

She Continued that, products that are consumable need to be tested and approved before it can be accepted to the market space, which the Medicine Council and Food and drugs Authority (FDA) has the power and approval before it can be sold out.

Dr. Anastacia stressed that, in an era of evidence-based practice, there is need to develop products that would provide effective care to patients, which requires collaborative research between scientists and practitioners.

She divulged that, although traditional medicine occupies a very important place in primary healthcare especially in rural areas, due to its accessibility, availability and affordability, which orthodox medicines have the clear advantage in terms of proven efficacy, quality and safety.

She said these issues could be addressed by standardizing the mode of preparation and evaluating the products at all levels of the production process. She therefore challenge traditional practitioners to take advantage of the enabling environment being offered by (MoH) through (TMPC) to promote traditional and alternative medicine in the country.
