The 24th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards generated a lot of conversations both before and after the event.

Held on May 6th, 2023, at the Accra International Conference Center, the event was filled with electrifying performances by renowned artists such as Black Sherif, Piesie Esther, Sarkodie, Ofori Amponsah, Medikal, King Promise, and many more.

VGMA recognized the hard work of Ghanaian musicians and awarded several deserving artists. King Promise walked away with the Album of the Year and Best Afropop Song of the Year awards. Piesie Esther was honored with the Gospel Song of the Year and Gospel Artiste of the Year awards. However, it was Black Sherif who became the center of attention after winning four awards, including Video of the Year, Best Hip-Hop Song of the Year, Most Popular Song of the Year, and the coveted Artiste of the Year award and many more.

The conversation surrounding the Artiste of the Year award intensified as many predicted Piesie Esther and Black Sherif as the frontrunners.

Ghanaian broadcast journalist Ebenezer Donkoh, professionally known as NYDJ, who currently works for the Kumasi-based radio station YFM, commended gospel artist Piesie Esther and her team for giving the reigning Artiste of the Year winner, Black Sherif, a tough competition.

NYDJ stated that the hitmaker of “Way3 Me Yie” and her team generated the most significant conversations leading up to the 24th VGMA. He added that the winner of the Gospel Artiste of the Year award provided a strong competition to Black Sherif and praised her for her tremendous efforts in the music industry, spanning two solid decades.

He wrote:

Aside all the trolls (for the culture), Piesie Esther and her team generated the biggest conversations heading into this year’s VGMAs.

She had one of the biggest songs and did incredibly well the Year under review.

I remember when I met her and the husband (manager) last year at Okay FM on my big brother Abeiku Santana ‘s show.

They “complained” of being sidelined in awards etc and I remember the exact words I shared with them off air when I heard “W’ay3 Me Yie” . Trust me, they listen.

Congratulations Piesie. You gave Black Sherif a good competition and trust me, you’re more than successful for coming this far even after 20 years. May we continue to win souls for Christ!
