Dr. Fred Adomako, the Bono East Regional Health Director, has advised the populace against stigmatizing individuals who suffer from maternal mental health issues.

He emphasizes that maternal mental health conditions are medical conditions that require support, not stigmatization.

Dr. Adomako explains that maternal mental health issues, such as postpartum depression or anxiety, are common and treatable medical conditions that many new mothers experience.

These conditions are not a sign of weakness or something to be ashamed of. Rather, they are the result of the significant physical and emotional changes that occur during and after pregnancy.

The health director, urged the community to be understanding and supportive of those dealing with maternal mental health challenges. He emphasizes that these individuals need compassion and access to appropriate medical care and counseling, not judgment or isolation.

Dr. Fred Adomako said this during the launching of the World Purple Month at the Regional Health Directorate in Kintampo.

“1st May was World Maternal Mental Health Day, pregnant women faces a lot of challenges we have some instances that a women who will endure all the pain of pregnancy will successfully deliver and as soon she delivers, the joy of given birth suddenly turns to hate towards her new born child which we term as postpartum depression.”

|We advised the public not to look down on such people because it has a medical reason and a solution to it so we have to help them to go through the process of recovery.”

“Stigmatizing attitudes can prevent women from seeking the help they need, which can have serious consequences for their well-being and that of their families.” He said

Dr. Adomako’s advice is an important reminder that maternal mental health should be treated with the same seriousness and sensitivity as any other medical condition. By fostering a supportive and non-stigmatizing environment, the community can help ensure that new mothers receive the care and support they need during this critical time.
