Sierra Leone had been previously under British sovereignty.

Toward the end of the 18th century the Sierra Leone peninsula had been chosen by British philanthropists as a suitable place to which Africans who had been taken to Britain as slaves and freed there, or who had fought on the British side in the American Revolution, might be repatriated.

Independence came in April 1961, and Sierra Leone opted for a parliamentary system within the British Commonwealth. Sir Milton’s Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) led the country to independence and the first general election under universal adult franchise in May 1962.

Fellow Sierra Leoneans,

Today, as we celebrate the 63rd anniversary of our beloved nation’s independence, I am filled with immense pride and joy. Sierra Leone’s journey has been marked by resilience, and the indomitable spirit of its people. As the flag bearer of the All People’s Congress (APC), I am honored to share this significant day with each and every one of you.

From the luscious hills of Koinadugu to the vibrant streets of Freetown, our country reverberates with the hopes and dreams of its citizens. Our independence is not just a testament to our past struggles but a beacon of hope for a prosperous future that we are building together.

This anniversary is a time for reflection on our collective achievements and the challenges we have overcomed. It is also an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the ideals of freedom, justice, and equality for all Sierra Leoneans. As we look back on the progress we have made, let us also look forward with determination to the tasks that lie ahead.

The APC party pledges to continue working tirelessly towards the betterment of every citizen’s life. We stand committed to fostering a nation where peace and prosperity prevail and where every Sierra Leonean can achieve their fullest potential.

As we celebrate today, let us remember the strength found in our unity and the power of our diversity. Together, as one nation and one people, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.

I wish you all a joyful and peaceful Independence Day. May this day be filled with love, happiness, and a renewed sense of national pride.

God bless you all, and God bless Sierra Leone!

Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara

APC Flag Bearer
