“Government is customizing learning for students” – Education Minister

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has announced that the NPP led government is putting measures in place to customize learning for students.

According to him, the use of artificial intelligence, enables students to know their level of proficiency and progress as well as gives students to learn with their own peace while tailoring activities to strength of each student.

The Education Minister, said this just days after President Akufo-Addo announced the distribution of 1.3 million tablets to public Senior High School and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students to ensure that all sectors of the country are digitized.

On Monday, March 25, 2024, the President of the Republic of Ghana, launched the ‘Ghana Smart Schools Project’ as part of the government’s effort to enhance e-learning and digitization. The project, is aimed to bolster Senior High School education by providing teaching and learning management systems, digital learning content, and electronic devices to all Senior High Schools and TVET schools across the country.

Dr. Adutwum, in an interview on Asaase Breakfast Show monitored by elvisanokyenew.com, disclosed that, the provision of tablets to students in second cycle institutions is just a piece of the smart school project.

“The President spoke, and he spoke about the development of smart schools, the device is one piece of the smart school, the device powers the smart school, so if you look at how other countries have done, sometimes the infrastructure, they make sure the moment you enter the gate, using your eyes as biometric identifies, the teachers knows that you are in school.”

“You submit your assignment online, its graded for you, feedback is provided back to you, we are able to customize teaching and learning for every student, using AI we are able to do a diagnostic assessment that tells the students that in English I’m at this level.

“So you might have a student is in form one of Senior High School but when they do a diagnostic assessment they will know that their level is Junior High school one, the system will then prescribe books and activities that the student will need to do, and the student can go on his computer and do those activities and then after finishing the activity, do the assessment again.

“Within the period of 2 months they will know whether they are moving up or not moving up and  they will be able to know that when I did my diagnostics, all my teachers knew that I was a Junior High School one student but today I have moved up. Learning is being customized for the students.” He explained.

By emphasizing the use of artificial intelligence to customize learning for students, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum underscores the transformative potential of technology in adapting instruction, content, and assessments to meet the individual needs, interests, and learning styles of students in the digital age. By providing real-time feedback, adaptive resources, and interactive experiences, AI-powered tools enable students to receive targeted support, challenge, and guidance that optimize their learning outcomes, mastery, and growth over time.
