The CIs that were used in the 2020 elections will govern the 2024 elections – EC

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Adukwei Mensa has indicated that they will use the Constitutional Instruments (CI’s) that they used in the 2020 elections to govern the 2024 general elections as well.

She said the EC will continue to use the guarantor system and the indelible ink as part of their process to ensure free, fair and transparent elections.

She explained that the Electoral Commission was intended to avoid indelible ink in the 2024 election because of adoption of biometric registers but now it has become necessary to include it to their process after stakeholder consultations.

The Electoral Commission came under serious criticism from both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the  largest opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC) after they declared its intention to exclude the indelible ink in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to the media after the EC visited the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Jean Adukwei Mensa indicated that the EC is determined to ensure peaceful and transparent elections.

“The C.I.s that were used in the 2020 elections will govern the 2024 elections as well and nothing changes, this means that we are continuing to use the guarantor system and we will continue to use the indelible ink as part of our process. We did emphasized though that because of the adoption of the biometric register, there was no need to use the indelible ink because every individual is identified with their fingerprints and every individual in the world has a unique fingerprints and no two individuals have the same fingerprints and therefore the indelible ink was not necessary ” She said.

According to her, the main purpose of their visit was to seek feedback and guidelines to render good service to the people of Ghana.

She reiterated that the EC will do whatever is required of them to ensure that the outcome of their work promotes peace and stability in the country.

“The essence is to share with the leadership of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) our programme of activities for the 2024 elections and also to see their feedbacks and their guidelines to ensure that our work is well grounded in law and the outcome of our work promote peace and stability of our country. So this is the essence of our visit to the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council this morning” Jean Mensah stated.
