We remain committed to ressolve Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger political impasse – ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has released a communique in response to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger decision to exit the Community.

ECOWAS said the authority of the Community remains committed to finding a negotiated solution to the political impasse.

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have officially exited from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The decision, according to the three countries, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to exit from ECOWAS was declared on Sunday, citing concerns that the community has deviated from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of Pan-Africanism.

In a response, ECOWAS stated in its communique that the three countries remain important members to them so they will ensure that proper measures will be put in place to solve their political impasse.

They added that the authority of Heads of State and Government, has been working assiduously with these three countries for the restoration of constitutional order.

“The ECOWAS Commission, as directed by the authority of Heads of State and Government, has been working assiduously with these three countries for the restoration of constitutional order. Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger remain important members to the Community and the authority remains committed to finding a negotiated solution to the political impasse.” the communique said.

“The ECOWAS Commission remains seized with the development and shall make further pronouncements as the situation evolves.” It added.

However, ECOWAS indicated that they are yet to receive official notification with regards to the decision of the three countries.

“The ECOWAS Commission is yet to receive any direct formal notification from the three Member States about their intention to withdraw from the Community.”

BELOW IS THE FULL COMMUNIQUE

The attention of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS Commission) has been drawn to a statement broadcast on the National Televisions of Mali and Niger announcing the decision of Burkina Faso Mali and Niger to withdraw from ECOWAS.

The ECOWAS Commission is yet to receive any direct formal notification from the three Member States about their intention to withdraw from the Community.

The ECOWAS Commission, as directed by the authority of Heads of State and Government, has been working assiduously with these three countries for the restoration of constitutional order. Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger remain important members to the Community and the authority remains committed to finding a negotiated solution to the political impasse.

The ECOWAS Commission remains seized with the development and shall make further pronouncement as the situation evolves.
